Résumé

Le fonctionnement du réseau Internet est fondé sur des technologies et des ressources non marchandes d’une part et sur des relations entre acteurs et des ressources marchandes d’autre part. Ainsi, les adresses et les protocoles de connexion permettant aux réseaux constitutifs de l’Internet de communiquer entre eux ne sont pas marchands. En revanche, les relations entre les réseaux formant l’Internet sont souvent marchandes et les noms de domaine sont échangés sur un marché qui devient de plus en plus actif. Cet article analyse le processus de marchandisation des éléments constitutifs du réseau Internet et en anticipe les conséquences. Il montre dans un premier temps que la marchandisation des adresses résulte de l’existence, peut-être temporaire, d’une rareté et qu’elle remet en cause les fondements du réseau. Dans un second temps, il examine les conséquences de la libéralisation en cours de la création des noms de domaine sur l’évolution d’un marché primaire et d’un marché secondaire déjà actifs.
